School Gardens Blog!

We are so excited that our LGT Program Manager Audrey Aamodt is back with us after her amazing adventure as a teacher on Class Afloat! Check out what her class was up to this term at http://www.classafloat.com/

Little Green Thumbs is alive and well at Rosthern Elementary School, where they have already had their Celebration Event!

On April 5, 2012, the 18 students in the grade 3/4 classroom hosted 12 parents for a pizza party!

Here is their description of their wonderful event:

"We made our dough from scratch, and then used the ripe tomatoes and green peppers (and dried oregano from last year's garden) from our garden to make the pizza sauce.  We topped the pizza with meat and cheese, as well as more of our own classroom-grown peppers.  Parents joined us as the pizza was coming out of the oven.  Students also enjoyed showing the giant tomato plants and newly planted flowers to their parents. It was a great success!"

Thanks to their wonderful teacher, the grade 3/4 students at RES had a great time with their garden.  Best wishes Mrs. Ens on your upcoming adventure!

This week some of our flowers were ready for pots.  The kids are having fun transplanting their flowers and checking out the roots sprouting out of their seedlings.  We've talked a lot this week about where plants get their food and what those strange white sprouts are coming out of the bottoms of the plants.

Last week we planted our flowers and herbs.  The kids were very excited to see their plants popping up this week!  We have been busy charting their growth and making predictions for next week.

Hi all,

I just wanted to share an amazing class website that is documenting the LGT experience that the grade 6's in Mr. Marshall's class at Confederation Park Community School in Saskatoon are up to.

We were so excited to have our Little Green Thumbs garden featured in our local newspaper, the Melville Advance on Nov. 30/11.  Also, we have had the parents into our class for Education Week in Oct. when we were planting, and Prairie Valley School Division will be featuring us in their Celebration Items.  We are thrilled.   Now, Dec. 8, the plants are a foot high and thriving.   Mrs. Allen and the North Valley Elementary Students. The student were very curious about the mysterious contraption in the classroom. Some thought it might be a space ship other had no idea what was hanging in our classroom. During center time we discussed what our grow light was and what it is used for. Tomorrow we will be graphing student choices on what to plant, we will be planting our top three choices. What will they be? The adventure continues....

Today we began our journey into the wonderful world of Little Green Thumbs. We had a few bumps on the road but our head custodian was so very accommodating! We are looking forward to getting dirty after lunch and getting everything ready for the kids on Monday! I am a bit nervous about the worms I must say.

Until next time Mrs. U
