Ebon Stables Ebon Stables is home to 60 horses, about half of which are boarded by clients taking regular lessons, the other half belong to Elaine Partington. Ebon Stables was built in 1980 by John Blacklock and family and Elaine Partington joined the company in 1987. We offer a tour that begins in the main barn showing the daily routine of horse care here at Ebon, and then we move outside to discuss our outdoor facilities and show the grounds. The tour focuses on providing students with a general understanding of what is involved in an operation this size, as well as demonstrating what sort of career opportunities exist in the horse industry. Did you know a pig's vision is almost twice that of a human? Would you like to spy on pigs as they eat sleep and go about their daily pig business? These facts and experiences are just a sample of what is included in the first barn as a 'science centre' devoted to the pig. The Pork Interpretive Gallery is located at Elstow, just a 40 minute drive east of Saskatoon on highway 16. It is the only barn in the country with a see-through roof that allows you to watch the animals plus learn all about pigs and their environment! Along with being able to view a modern hog barn, there are interactive displays and tour guides to answer all your questions about pigs, farming, the environment, and pork production. Pound-Maker Pound-Maker is a 4500 head feedlot, constructed in 1970 by a group of local farmers who needed an alternative market for their grain. In 1991, a feedlot expansion and construction of a 10 million litre ethanol plant was added to the venture. Today, Pound-Maker has a one-time feeding capacity of 28,500 head and produces 13 million litres of ethanol. Pound-Maker offers tour of the ethanol facility and feedlot. The tour focuses on providing students with a general understanding of grain and livestock through both ethanol and feedlot production. Prairie Fibre Mill As the only fibre mill in Saskatchewan, along with a retail shop, the Laws own Merino and Shetland sheep, from which they sell wool through their store and meat at the farm gate. Among the goods produces for purchase are yarn, roves, quilt batting and felts. The family offers individual and group tours through the lambing barns and has a hands-on demonstration of different fibre types as well as demonstrations of drop-spinning and hand-spinning. Visit the Interpretive Center and view a brief video and various displays of Dr. Wheeler's award and honors. Visit his original barn, seed-cleaning plant and houses, as well as the restored flower gardens and orchard. Tours focus mainly on sustainable agriculture and the benefits of direct seeding and shelterbelts. Star Egg has been operating since 1965 and under the current ownership since 1978. Tours include demonstrations on how eggs are cleaned, graded by a Candler, and packaged for use by the retailer and the consumers. Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve, located just an hour north of Saskatoon, was designated in January 2000 by United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization- Man and the Biosphere program (UNESCO MAB). These are ecologically significant areas that have the capacity to demonstrate: Conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, and biodiversity Development that is ecologically and culturally sustainable Capacity Building through research, monitoring, education, and training. We offer many educational activities and resources for educators and their students. The library has a selection of books on ecoteaching, nature activities, and kid-orientated environmental reading. There are ecology and nature videos as well as computer activities that include virtual bird watching and environmental simulation games. Life cycle puzzles, casts of local species and a sandbox to practise recognizing tracks, and chicken, frog, butterfly, and plant stamp sets are throughout the education centre. For outdoor activities: there are bandanna quests and games to use while hiking or for a miniature scavenger hunt and CleverCatch beach balls for some lakefront fun.
