September 18 – 25 is National Biotechnology Week. Each year, Canada celebrates the innovation and creativity of Canadian life science researchers and entrepreneurs. One of our goals for local activities during National Biotechnology Week is to promote opportunities in the sciences to grade 10 – 12 students.
Canadian biotech companies and organizations are admired throughout the world for their achievements. The creation of the CANADARM, the discovery of insulin, the licensing of human and animal vaccines, and advancing genetically modified crops have earned respect abroad and bolstered economic growth nationally. From humble beginnings, in Canada we now number over 500 biotech firms providing unprecedented benefits for today and the future.
On Wednesday, September 23, 2009 the University of Saskatchewan labs will be reassigned to approximately 250 Grade 10 – 12 students. Students will spend the day exploring the exciting world of biotechnology and potential careers in this field.
